What a wonderful Trunk Show we had from Jaye West of Dragonfly Designs! Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful samples with us, Jaye!

We also had an inspiring Trunk Show from Nashville Cotton Company to get our creative juices flowing for, and I hate to say it, our back-to-school sewing. Yes, before you know it school bells will be ringing once more. How I miss those much simpler days!

Slipping Hoop? More "Hand" Sewing Sense...

An inexpensive and quick “no-sew” way to prevent your embroidery hoop from slipping is to wrap your hoop with athletic “pre-wrap”. You can purchase it at your local sporting goods store. “Pre-wrap” is a foam-like stretchy material, which sticks to itself when gently stretched. It’s about 2” wide and is purchased by the roll. If you go to the sporting goods store and the clerk has no idea what you want, tell them that you want the material that football players “pre-wrap” their legs or wrists with. They use this material before taping with athletic tape as it prevents the athletic tape from sticking to their skin. “Pre-wrap” can be applied to the outer or inner hoop (I wrap the outer hoop) by just gently stretching and wrapping as you work you way around the hoop. When you reach the end, just pull a little tighter and tear, the tape “end” will stick to itself. When your pre-wrapped hoop begins to fray, simply remove that section and re-wrap. It lasts a long time. This method is fast and requires no hand stitching to keep it in place as does twill tape binding.

Tips for transferring embroidery designs to fabric.

Trudy Horne, longtime columnist for Creative Needle Magazine and owner of Collars, Etc. Pattern Company, recommends using a 3B soft graphite pencil for tracing embroidery designs, especially delicate, detailed motifs. She suggests placing starched & ironed fabric over the embroidery design and tracing with the soft pencil. Sewing the Neck Binding to a Bishop Dress

Having trouble sewing in the binding for the neckline of a Bishop Dress? Can’t seem to keep it close to the first row of smocking? Try this simple solution:
Using a light weight, tear-away stabilizer (the kind used in machine embroidery), mark
the length of the finished neck opening. Position and pin the Bishop on the
stabilizer, right side up and distribute the pleats evenly. Loosen the
pressure on the foot of your sewing machine, then carefully stitch along neck
edge close to the first smocked row. Tear away the stabilizer. Pin the neck
binding to the neck of the Bishop with right sides together and sew along the previous stitching from the wrong side. Trim neck edge, if needed, turn binding to wrong side and blind
stitch in place by by hand. Don’t forget to turn in ends at the back.
Note: refer to your pattern for length and width of binding.

If you have trouble determining which is the “right” and which is the “wrong” side of your fabric try to remember this:

The selvage edge, usually 1/2” wide, is peppered with tiny holes. If the holes look like little volcanos coming at you, that is the “right” side of the fabric. If the holes look like tiny depressions in the cloth, that is the “wrong” side of the fabric.
